I watch… because…

March 15, 2009

Happily, and, yes, amazingly, I’ve stuck with my goal of not watching crap television and now stick solely with the deep dramas. Well, deep to me. Television should be used to take us away from our ordinary routines and throw us into a completely different world, which is why reality television is just so awful.

Watching reality TV is like holding a mirror up to your face and saying “See that?! You’re one teeny step away from behaving just.like.that. You have the potential!”

And, thus, I watch <insert show> because <insert reason>.

Big Love… shocking, but I’m not an underground extremist Mormon polygamist. If you are an extremist practicing plural marriage with your sister-wives, your children, their children, and all with one husband, I don’t expect that you would appreciate the heartbreaking yet humorous up-and-down lives of the three Big Love wives and Bill their hunk. Maybe you are a polygamist and would appreciate it. Doesn’t matter because I’m not and I so do.

Breaking Bad…I’m not a dying science teacher turned drug producer and dealer. Who is to say that if I were, I wouldn’t turn to making meth? Well, actually, while I have recently learned to follow a recipe in the kitchen to create some scrumptious dinners, you simply would not want me near anything scientific or chemical or meth-y. It just wouldn’t be an option for me. You can’t fault poor Walt for putting his God-given talent for measuring and mixing to use. He has good intentions after all.

Damages…I’m not a vindictive b**** bent on avenging the death of my man or a cruel woman skilled at using her immense power and privilege to manipulate all things around her. Yeah, I’m not these things, but wow, to be only for an hour. Right; that’s why I watch.

Weeds….see Breaking Bad. After her husband dies, mom Nancy takes to selling pot because her spoiled offspring simply shouldn’t suffer. What else is she to do? Sell the expensive house and dress the kids in Target instead of <insert the name of some super expensive store that you know I would never shop at>? That would be asinine.

What about “The Office”? OK, maybe it is WAY to close to reality TV, but I enjoy watching all the dysfunctional office workers and corporate executives. Oh, and I have a crush on Jim – that may have something to do with it too.
