Choices, choices, choices

January 28, 2010

Hypothesis: Life is all about choices, and every single decision we make, big or small, is either is in line with who we are and who we want to strive to be and our goals or it’s not.

Does that make sense to you? Read it again (please).

From the time my three monkeys were little, we have taught and discussed making good choices. The hypothesis above is simple. Simple concept for a young child to understand. And simple, then, for us as adults to get, dontcha think?

So, why have I made such bad choices in regards to my health? I’d like to quickly answer “zero willpower” but I know there’s more to it than that. Why did I continue to drink diet sodas day after day and year after year even when I knew how horrible it is for me? Why did I continue to overeat and keep piling in the sweets and processed foods as my weight continued to climb and my body was exhausted?

Well, if I look at the hypothesis again, the last part is key to understanding where I’ve gone wrong – who we are and who we want to strive to be and our goals. I did not know who I was, who I wanted to be, and had absolutely no concrete goals. If you agree with my hypothesis, then you’ll agree that choices are much easier to make when you have these things! It’s ten-times easier to pass up a Snickers bar for an apple when you realize that the Snicker will only take you further away from your goals and is simply not in line with who you want to be. (Now, don’t freak, a Snickers bar every now and then is fine, just stick with me here for example sake.)

Are you continuing to make unhealthy choices, like I was not too long ago?

Is it because you haven’t determined your goals and don’t know what the new you looks like?

Yeah, I know, so easy to say but so hard to do, right?

Oh wait! That’s a choice you have to make to either get on the path to change or not!

exactly..our choice! i think that sometimes (manytimes) our goals are ‘out there’ but not clearly defined..and face it the path of least resistance is definitely the easiest. great things to think about!
